This collection contains biographical information, including a vita and newspaper clippings; publications; research materials, including Costa Rican census materials; her dissertation and thesis; teaching and class notes for classes taught by Hoffman throughout her career; and reference files. Also included are materials that were passed down from her grandfather, Andrew Kalpaschnikoff, including his memoirs and two photograph albums. The memoirs, in early draft from, include his experiences growing up in Imperial Russia's upper class and the entries describing his active life in Russia's government and army continue until after the Revolution, when he moved to the United States.

Elizabeth "Betsy" Hoffman received a B.A. (1968) in History from Smith College; an M.A. (1969) and Ph. D (1972 from the University of Pennsylvania; and a Ph. D (1979) in Economics from the California Institute of Technology. She has been employed as an Assistant Professor in History and Economics at the University of Florida, Northwestern University, and Purdue University. She was the Dean of Liberal Arts (1993-1997) at Iowa State University, and is currently employed by...
